AUCTION BONANZA

I attended an auction for the first time and was surprised by how much fun it was. Run by Cynthia & Walter Thomason, Auction 84 in Davie, FL has been in existence as far back as 1978 and ever since Cindy and I joined a critique group together in our early writing days. But since our house is crammed full of Stuff, and I’m trying desperately to clean out the clutter, we had no reason to shop for any more furniture or knick knacks. Lo and behold, suddenly we’re in the market to furnish a complete condo, and Cindy says they’re getting in a shipload of brand new home goods. So we go to check out the auction one Saturday night. It’s so much fun that I bring a friend the next time. I buy two cabinets, pleased with my purchases and the prices. People are buying entire bedroom sets, beautiful sofas, marble-topped cocktail tables, and unique accent pieces for a steal! Up for bids are tropical decor, paintings, china and crystal, lamps, silk plants, dining room sets, porcelain, and more! The room is packed, each seat filled, bidders eagerly raising their cards. In the back is a snack bar, selling hot dogs, chips, burgers, and ice cream if you get hungry while waiting for the items you want to come up for bid. (You can come early to examine the offerings). The auctioneers rotate, showcasing their individual personalities, as info rolls from their lips so fast you have to strain to hear. Oh my, I wish I had the room in my place to fit that [fill in blank]. I love so many things but would have nowhere to put them. It’s tempting to come every week, just for the entertainment, but I know I’d be tempted to buy stuff I don’t need. But next time I need a bargain or want to treasure hunt, I’ll go straight to Auction 84.

Auctions are great! My sister and her husband sell vintage jewelry, so attend at least two a week. I've gone a few times and there are always some AMAZING bargains, often on furniture.
